The New Year may not be a happy one for some of Salem's residents on Days of Our Lives, as two characters are going to receive some extremely devastating news about their futures.

Will Questions Paul About His Love Life

Paul (Christopher Sean) has been busy recovering from a surgery on his shoulder in preparation of returning to his career as an all-star MLB pitcher, while continuously thinking about his secret ex-boyfriend Sonny (Freddie Smith), who happens to live in Salem. Paul was already crushed to learn that his ex not only met someone else, but married him, and unfortunately it won't be the only sad news he receives.

He could now learn that his shoulder may never properly recover, or that his team may have cut him loose-meaning his career is over. Not only would no longer playing baseball be the end of his career, it would be the end of his cover that keeps anyone from knowing he is gay, because of his carefully crafted reputation as a womanizer.

Will Gets Closer To The truth About Sonny's Secret Past

However, the news could also be a blessing in disguise for him to try and win Sonny back from Will (Guy Wilson), as he will no longer need to hide the truth about his sexuality if he is no longer a famous ballplayer. The need to keep the truth that he was gay a secret was the reason the two former loves broke up in the first place, so if he is willing to be out and in the open, he could have a potential chance with Sonny once more if he and Will end their marriage.

Meanwhile, Rafe (Galen Gering) will also be set up for a not-so-pleasant New Year, when his career as a cop abruptly ends and he is fired from the Salem PD. Word will get out that he has been targeting Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) in the hopes of putting someone from the family behind bars, even though he has no true reasons to be looking into the young heir. As a result, action will be taken against him, and he will find himself looking for a new job as 2015 approaches.

Days of Our Lives airs Monday-Friday at 1 p.m. on NBC.
