Britain has given us two supremely talented boy bands that will now go head-to-head at this year's MTV Video Music Awards for the same title.

One Direction and the Wanted are both nominated for Best New Artist and the decision might be a close call. In 2011, One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" broke Sony Music United Kingdom's record for the fastest-selling single in the U.K. and now that same song, which is the first single off of their first album "Up All Night," is the nominated song to represent the band in the Best New Artist category. For the Wanted, they are bringing "Glad You Came" to help them secure the win. The song made the U.K. group the first boy band to lead the Billboard Pop Songs chart with a debut single since 1997's Hanson hit "MMBop."

Two American signature boy bands, Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync, reached that pinnacle only by their seventh chart entry.

One Direction is also up for Best Pop Video for their song "Beautiful," competing against "We Are Young" by fun., "Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber, "Payphone" by Maroon 5 and "We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris.

The band will also perform that night, along with making their first VMA appearance.

The VMAs will be hosted by Kevin Hart and will air on Sept. 6 at 8 p.m./7c.

The night's award presenters include Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, and the "Fierce Five" Olympic gold medalists Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross.
