'Jersey Shore' Canceled After Six Seasons; Star Ronnie Magro Says It's 'Bittersweet'
"The Jersey Shore" series -- which was basically free advertising for tanning salons everywhere (other than "Tan Mom") -- is being canceled after six seasons and three years of being on air.
The show peaked in ratings with as many as 8 million viewers tuning in; however, ratings declined in more recent seasons, according to the Associated Press.
The final season's first episode will premiere on Oct. 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, but MTV will take a look back down the "Shore's" memory lane starting Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. ET/PT, with a one-hour special called "Gym, Tan, Look Back," right before the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.
The series made new mom Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino famous and popularized the terms "guido," "guidette," "smush," "grenades" and "GTL" (Gym, Tan, Laundry).
The show became a pop-culture phenomenon and one of MTV's biggest hits when it began in Dec. 2009, reported the AP. It created the spinoff shows "Snooki & JWOww" and "The Pauly D Project."
A lot has changed in three years. Though the sixth season is taking place in its original location, Seaside Heights, N.J. but Snooki recently gave birth to baby Lorenzo Dominic and "The Situation" is sober after time in rehab. But there will still be drama. Castmember Deena Cortese is said to have been arrested for disorderly conduct after her and JWOWW got into a bar brawl, according to TODAY.com.
In a WetPaint Entertainment interview, cast member Ronald "Ronnie" Ortiz-Magro revealed he sad to see the show end, but is looking forward for what's to come.
"It's bittersweet that it's over, but I'm excited to see what the future holds. These past six seasons have been unforgettable."
And Magro has reason to be excited: his once turbulent relationship with Samantha Rae "Sammi" "Sweetheart" Giancola is going well. In fact, it's going so well that the pair are moving in together.
"I have an extension of my family now and I'm walking away with the girl of my dreams and some amazing memories. I'll definitely be nostalgic but I'm ready to move forward. I already have some things in the pipeline. Most of all, I've gotta thank MTV and all our fans. Without them, none of this would have been possible."
Will Magro and Giancola follow in their cast mates' footsteps and star in their own spin off series?
