‘Sister Wives’ Cast News: Brown Family Breaks Silence On Meri Divorce Shocker, Say They Made Decision To ‘Restructure Family’ Together [PHOTO]
Fans were floored when news that Kody Brown from Sister Wives had divorced his first wife, Meri, and legally married his fourth wife, Robyn, and now, the family has released an official statement about the situation.
"We have chosen to legally restructure our family," the family said in a statement to E! News. "We made this decision together as a family. We are grateful to our family, friends and fans for all their love and support."
News broke over the weekend of the quiet divorce and marriage after Starcasm posted the court documents on its website.
The news shocked fans of the series, as the family has lived with Kody and Meri as the only legally married couple for decades. The two married in 1990, and have their daughter, Mariah. Since their marriage Kody went on to also marry Janelle in 1993 (they have six children together), Christine in 1994 (also six children), and Robyn in 2010 (they have one child together, though Robyn also has three children from a previous marriage). However, the other three marriages are all spiritual, as polygamy is illegal.
It is unclear as to why the family chose to change things now, though TMZ reports it is likely a move to allow Robyn's other children more security within the family, such as access to insurance and other benefits, though it has not been confirmed.
And while fans have wondered if Meri will stick around for future, it appears she is still a part of the family fold and is just now a spiritually connected sister wife, instead of the true legal one.
It is unclear if the specific situation will be addressed in later episodes of the family's current season of the show.
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on TLC.
