The top hat image featured in FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show may signal more about the fifth season than currently assumed.

'American Horror Story' Star Evan Peters Confirms He'll Be Part Of Season 5?

American Horror Story producers frequently pepper in clues about the next season of the show throughout their episodes. AHS co-creator Ryan Murphy pointed out the image of a top hat to Entertainment Weekly as a clue to what season 5 would be about.

As fans now know, the fifth season of American Horror Story is called Hotel and that top hat was a reference to the movie musical Top Hat from 1935, which takes place at a hotel.

Is Connie Britton Getting Ready to Return to 'American Horror Story'?

The clue is even more prophetic considering one of the more popular songs in the film is Cheek to Cheek, which is the name of Lady Gaga's recent jazz album with Tony Bennett. Gaga will be one of the main stars of season 5.

With all of this in mind, it would seem that the clue ends there, but could it also mean that they might pay homage to Top Hat? Could season 5 be filled with musical numbers, especially with someone like Gaga on board?

Based on Freak Show, Murphy and company are not opposed to full-on musical numbers in the horror anthology series. Cast members like Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters performed songs during Freak Show and this could indicate a more musical tilt going forward.

American Horror Story: Hotel airs in October on FX, though the network has not yet announced a specific premiere date.
