'Orange Is the New Black' Season 3 News: Emmys Could Force Netflix Series To Compete As A Drama [VIDEO]
The Television Academy has apparently yet to make a decision on whether Netflix's Orange Is the New Black is a comedy or a drama.

After implementing new rule changes, the academy that votes on the Emmys ruled all one-hour shows to be dramas and all half-hour shows comedies. This would force "dramedies" like Orange Is the New Black, The CW's Jane the Virgin and Fox's Glee to compete in the Drama categories.
However, the rule also said that shows could appeal to a panel for why their show should be placed in the alternate category. Now, the TV Academy has revealed three shows that won the appeal to stay in the Comedy categories.
Netflix Announces June Premiere For 'Orange Is The New Black' Season 3
Jane the Virgin, Glee and Showtime's Shameless will all be competing in the Comedy categories despite being hour-long shows, according to the academy. The only big Emmy player left off this list, of course, is Orange Is the New Black.
The TV Academy did not comment on the status of Orange Is the New Black, though The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that more announcements will be made in the next couple weeks.
Since OITNB is really the only other prominent "dramedy" predicted to make a big splash at the Emmys, it's possible that the academy will force it to go into the Drama categories, perhaps to make an example out of the new rule change.
Either way, the show may do well with voters in either genre category but it may face tougher competition if it's going against the likes of Netflix's House of Cards and HBO's Game of Thrones.
