They fled the state long ago to prevent prosecution for their polygamous lifestyle, but the legal case between the Brown Family from TLC's Sister Wives and the state of Utah will continue for a little bit longer.

Meri Stands Up For Decision To Divorce Kody

According to documents filed with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the Utah Attorney General's Office is asking for more time to fight the Brown family in their ongoing saga on whether the attempt to persecute them was legal. The request was granted, and the case will resume in court in May.

"This case is fairly novel, factually and legally complex, and relates to the constitutionality of Utah's bigamy statutes and the legal status of polygamous practices and marriages in Utah, particularly whether such practices and marriages may be criminalized in conformity with the Constitution, and more time is necessary to adequately address the novel issues presented," Utah federal Solicitor Parker Douglas wrote in the motion seeking an extension.

Meri Receives Devastating News

The family has admitted in the past that they were very afraid at the time that they had created contingency plans during the saga (they eventually moved to Nevada), which included them prepping to head to prison.

"When we were on The Oprah Show in 2010, it was an extremely painful time," Kody Brown said in a recent appearance on Oprah: Where Are They Now. "We were definitely afraid of going to jail."

Meri, Kody's first (and formerly only legal wife), also added that they had taken precautions, which included deciding who their children would go to in the event the family was arrested.

"We had actually all listed who our kids would go to in the event that we were taken away and put in jail," she said.
