Lange has been the unequivocal star of American Horror Story for the entirety of its run, even when she was just a supporting player in season 1. The actress has won two Emmy Awards for her performances in the show and gained a huge legion of new fans in the process.
Now that she is leaving American Horror Story, Lange spoke with GoldDerby (in a video featured below) about how she feels about the series as a whole and why she loved Freak Show so much.

"I love this season," she told GoldDerby editors in a video interview about Freak Show. "It was my favorite because it really was like a troupe of misfits. We were like a caravan of gypsies. It felt that way when we were shooting it. There was a wonderful kind of freakishness about it - that every one of these characters - and Elsa as much as any of the others. There was that thing of those secrets that you held and those things that were hidden, that you were hiding. And it's always wonderful to play a character like that."
The legendary actress enjoyed the "textures and layers" she got to have through playing Elsa Mars, the leader of a troupe of freak performers in Jupiter, Fla.
Many Lange fans are disappointed that she is leaving American Horror Story, and even she admits that she will miss some aspects of working on the show.
"What has been tremendous about this experience is that I've been given the opportunity to play these characters who are so borderline mad and with these kind of huge emotional lives and these huge emotional shifts," she observed.
"I will miss the camaraderie that you naturally have when you work in a repertory company," she said, referring to the show's frequent use of the same actors. "Working with the same actors for four years, knowing their rhythms, knowing they know yours. There's something so wonderful about that."
American Horror Story is now moving into an era without Lange, with stars like Lady Gaga, Matt Bomer and Wes Bentley set to star in the upcoming fifth season, titled Hotel.
American Horror Story: Hotel is expected to debut in October on FX.
