"Amber Behind Bars": Dr. Drew's Prison Interview with Amber Portwood Airs Oct. 9, 10PM EST
MTV will air a special on Tuesday, Sept. 9 featuring their "Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood.
What makes the show so special? Portwood is being interviewed by "Celebrity Rehab" host Dr. Drew in a correctional facility.
Dr. Drew will chat with the reality star at the Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana where the 22-year-old is serving time behind bars.
The troubled mother of a toddler, Leah, received a 5-year sentence in June after she failed to complete a drug rehab program. She was ordered to attend rehab after she was arrested in December, 2011 for drug possession and parole violations. According to a report, Portwood opted to serve the time in jail rather than complete the drug program..
Unfortunately, since she began serving time in prison, Portwood has yet to see her 3-year-old daughter.
According to InTouch, her daughter's father, Gary Shirley, told the magazine he can't bring himself to tell their daughter the truth about Amber's whereabouts.
Another source revealed their daughter thinks she hasn't seen her mother since June because she is away "making a movie in California."
"Amber and Gary are going with the idea that she is away shooting a film in California," an insider close to the situation told Radar Online. "This is their cover; they don't want to tell Leah that she's actually in prison - because they're not sure she would understand and don't want her thinking worse of her mom. But the problem is, everyone at Leah's daycare knows that Amber is her mom and that she's in prison, there's no hiding that fact."
According to a report, the starlet is making major headway behind bars.
Portwood has reportedly lost 25 pounds, is currently enrolled in parenting classes and sings with the prison choir.
"It took time, but she's now taking a hard, long look at herself in the mirror and realizing she needs to make it up to her daughter," another source told Radar Online. "Her first step in starting afresh was to join the prison choir. She's actually pretty good and loves singing. She's also been working out; the exercise helps Amber focus on her targets. Amber wants to use this experience to make herself a better person," the source concluded.
"I went to jail because I had an addiction to opiates," Portwood said in a recent statement. "You live and you learn. And that's real. It's time for me to stop partying and realize that even though I'm 21, I'm not a normal 21-year-old, I'm a mother. Which means I have to grow up quicker and start acting like a mother."
"Amber Behind Bars" airs Tuesday, October 9 on MTV at 10/9c.
