Marvel Studios' Ant-Man could showcase the case of the incredible shrinking audience.

The July film released its first trailer on Monday, but the film's embattled history and the trailer's undeniably tame fan reaction could be a harbinger of Marvel's first box office flop since the creation of a cohesive MCU.

Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) isn't one of the comic book magnate's biggest names. The pint-sized hero will debut as one of Phase 3's numerous non-Avenger films but, unlike Guardians of the Galaxy, this hyphenate protagonist may wallow in pre-established obscurity. James Gunn managed to drag Star-Lord and Co. out of the shadows with the catchy beat of 80s tunes but Ant-Man may have squandered its best chance at success.

That lost opportunity came in the form of writer/director Edgar Wright. The British filmmaker, who is known for the Blood and Ice Cream/Three Cornettos Trilogy, was attached to the project as far back as 2006. However, creative difference led to Wright's departure last May, prompting Marvel to replace him with director Peyton Reed while allowing Adam McKay and Rudd to apply hefty changes to the script.

Despite losing Wright's unmistakable wit, the film could draw curious viewers with its reimagining of Ant-Man's origin story. A mantel typically taken up by Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Ant-Man will instead be a persona bandied about by Scott Lang. Pym will be the creator of the incredible shrinking technology, but Lang, a former thief in need of some serious redemption, will be the one to don the suit and take on Yellowjacket (Corey Stoll).
