When a follower asked him what tribe he was surrounded by, Phillips replied, "Many nations represented."
Phillips has been very close with the Native American community over the years. The 53-year-old actor has Cherokee in his blood and has been adopted by the Sioux and Cheyenne tribes. With Phillips playing a Cheyenne in Longmire, the actor got first hand experience with Cheyenne elders while preparing for the role of Henry Standing Bear.
"As soon as I was cast, I flew up to Montana to meet Marcus Red Thunder, the man who was the inspiration for my character," Phillips told Cowboys & Indians back in 2012. "I visited the rez, received a blessing from one of the Cheyenne elders, met with Tribal President Leroy Spang, participated in a sweat with a lot of the brothers, and got to experience their culture firsthand."
Longmire has been one of the most notable shows on television to depict Native American culture.
Longmire was shockingly cancelled back in August last year by A&E due to low ratings in the adults 18-49 demographic. After a massive Twitter campaign, Netflix saved the show in November, renewing it for a 10-episode fourth season.
Longmire season 4 is expected to be released in the fall on Netflix.
