Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan is not exactly pleased with the back and forth regarding whether the show is a comedy or a drama.

Uzo Aduba Gives One Word To Tease 'Orange Is the New Black' Season 3

Last year, Orange Is the New Black picked up 12 nominations at the Emmys when it submitted as a comedy series. But now with the Emmys' new rule in place, the show has to submit as a drama due to it being an hourlong show.

Kohan and company attended an Emmy event in Los Angeles last week to raise awareness for the show. She spoke with awards website GoldDerby about the show switching to the drama categories and was very candid about her frustration.

"I think all of these labels don't apply anymore," she explained. "There's humor in dramas, there's drama in the humor categories, it's all a human experience and everyone's so hellbent on putting a label on it and saying this is drama and this is comedy. Enough already. Why do we have to fit in a box? It's very frustrating to me."

The show runner admitted that in some ways the show can be limited by the fact that it is so hard to categorize. The Emmys had this struggle last year when only Uzo Aduba took home a trophy and the awards organization barely awarded it anywhere else.

It remains to be seen how well Orange Is the New Black will do at the Emmys this year now that it is competing as a drama series, but the show's popularity among Netflix subscribers allows the cast and crew to know that they are still doing a great job.

Orange Is the New Black season 3 is scheduled for release on Netflix on Friday, June 12. All 13 episodes are set to be released at once.
