The show runner behind Fox's Bones is actually hoping that fans are upset about the current arc of Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel).

'Bones' Star Emily Deschanel Talks 'Strong Possibility' Of Season 11 Renewal

Brennan and Booth are going through some real marital issues on Bones, with Booth going through his addiction to gambling. While this is has not been the most fun arc the show has ever done, it may be necessarily for the show to continue to evolve.

Bones executive producer Stephen Nathan recently spoke with TVLine about the arc and why he is okay with fans being upset about it.

"It's unfolding in a very realistic and upsetting way for these two characters," Nathan explained. "Brennan is a very practical, rational person and understands the risks. Maybe in the past, this would have been a very cold decision for her. The logic she uses on a daily basis certainly comes into play, but there is real pain and difficulty involved in this for her. It's torturous, because she truly loves Booth."

"So we had to find a way to deal with that and deal with a very, very proud man in Booth coming to terms with admitting to himself how enormous an act this was and how far-reaching the consequences," he continued. "What we tried to do in the last few episodes is really contend with the emotional difficulty of that, and then see if there's some kind of resolution going into the finale."

As for the fan response, Nathan said he "would be very disappointed if people were not upset," considering they've grown to love Brennan and Booth through 10 seasons.

"You have expectations of people that are in your life," Nathan explained. "You don't expect them to do this, and so you get upset. But you know what? People usually surprise us, and they do things often that we think they're better than... And that goes for Brennan, too. Her reaction was very severe. But that's what happens."

Ultimately, the challenges they face as a couple are part of creating a compelling show. Nathan noted that "it's incumbent upon us to shake it up," and that "we started to do that at the end of Season 10, and it'll continue into Season 11."

The season finale of Bones airs Thursday, June 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
