Doctor Who nearly had a female doctor - three decades ago.

'Doctor Who' Series 9: Michelle Gomez Shocked By Missy's Premiere Behavior, New 'Level Of Disdain'

For the last 50 years, there has been a male time lord behind the TARDIS controls. Fans clamored for a woman to take over the roll as the Eleven Doctor (Matt Smith) regenerated into Twelve (Peter Capaldi), but it appears the recent recasting was not the first time the gender of the Doctor has been debated.

Back in 1986, series creator Sydney Newman revealed that the iconic time traveler should eventually have a female iteration, according to Cult Box.

"At a later stage, Dr. Who would be metamorphosed into a woman," Newman wrote. "This requires some considerable thought - mainly because I want to avoid a flashy Hollywood 'Wonder Woman' because this kind of hero(ine) has no flaws - and a character with no flaws is a bore."

In season 8, Doctor Who revealed the first regeneration gender change for a Time Lord - the Master/Mistress (see video below). Does this mean the series could make the same move once Capaldi turns in his sonic screwdriver?
