'Downton Abbey' News: Elizabeth McGovern Reveals Show's End?
Recently off an impressive season three finale in the U.K., the Primetime Emmy award-winning series "Downton Abbey" has continued to rake in millions of viewers worldwide but there has been no clear announcement as to how much longer it will air.
Elizabeth McGovern, who plays the role of Cora Crawley in the show, recently dished to The Mirror about her take on the future of "Downton Abbey."
"We still have the Christmas special to come and then I think we definitely have one more series in us," she said. "Nothing has officially been said, but I think we are going to go for one next year. I would hate for it to outstay its welcome."
The actress also spoke about getting emotional, assuming that her take on the show's soon-to-be end is correct.
"Who knows if I will cry... I'll try to be brave," the actress said.
McGovern's comments may not necessarily be accurate, but creator Julian Fellowes did express to Vanity Fair that "there will probably be a fifth" season of the show, which would mean "Downton Abbey" has two seasons left at the very least. He also noted that a fourth season has been already commissioned.
Next up for "Downton Abbey" will be its two-hour Christmas special, which was originally shot in August. It's rumored that the specialty episode's storyline may not revolve around the holidays. Nonetheless, the featured piece is set to air in the U.K. on Christmas Day.
Taking place in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey, the British period series chronicles the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family during the post-Edwardian era and revolves around historic events that took place during that respective time period. "Downton Abbey" will premiere in the U.S. in January of 2013.
