So You Think You Can Dance gave sent the contestants through the school of hard knocks during the first night of callbacks.

Winning and losing in Las Vegas is up to the toss of the dice, and the rolls of season 12's hopefuls weren't even hitting the table on Monday. After over 200 contestants were pushed through to callbacks, only 10 Street and 10 Stage performers will be left standing after night 2. The Callbacks are a bloodbath, and it seemed almost no managed to escape the judges' criticism on night one.

And don't even try to play the judges with a soppy love story or a down on your luck tale. American Idol may rely on such sentimental back-story, but Nigel Lythgoe and Co. didn't even think twice about sacking the stars of the series' first homegrown love affair.

At least this year the Stage/Street performers were allowed to fail in their own area of expertise. However, those who move into the Top 20 will have to learn to transition from classical to break dance without missing a beat.

"Once they hit that top 20, they are going to have to be prepared to do lots of other styles and lots of other things," Lythgoe told Entertainment Weekly. "So we're gonna see a lot of people fail."

Looks like So You Think You Can Dance has plenty more heartbreak scheduled for the second night of Callbacks. Find out more when the series airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
