Rose spoke with Access Hollywood recently where she revealed she wanted to be male as a child. When she was five, she said she watched a special Oprah episode about transitioning through surgery and subsequently started saving up money to do so. She collected money until she was 15 before deciding against it.
"I had this jar that I would collect dollars, in fact it was probably cents, so I had like 19 cents to go towards this surgery that I didn't really know a lot about," she explained.

Ultimately, Rose decided to just be comfortable with who she was.
"I started to change the way that I dressed and talked and I realized that I didn't want to transition and I just wanted to be more comfortable in my own skin," she said.
Despite not transitioning, Rose considers herself to be gender fluid, meaning she doesn't necessarily see herself as one gender or the other.
"I am very gender fluid and feel more like I wake up every day sort of gender neutral," she admitted.
Her Orange Is the New Black character Stella is similar, introducing herself to Piper (Taylor Schilling) as gender fluid. Rose has gained quite a following from OITNB fans after her big introductory season this year.
All three seasons of Orange Is the New Black are currently available to stream on Netflix.
