Their dark pasts have been haunting them as they investigate a confusing murder mystery on True Detective, and now, the dark skeletons in both Velcoro's (Colin Farrell) and Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) closets could affect the mystery.

Will Woodrugh's Sexual Orientation Play Into The Investigation?

Woodrugh's (Taylor Kitsch) closeted homosexuality has already proven to make it difficult for him as he investigates the sexual angle on Caspere's murder, which has forced him to confront gay male prostitutes as well. Now, Velcoro's being in Semyon's (Vince Vaughn) pocket, as well his complicated relationship with his son, and Bezzerides' past with her father's cult will also impede on the mystery.

As they continue to work together on the investigation, they will turn up another strange element of Caspere's secrets--as they work on figuring out just what he was involved in and how deep he was.

Bezzerides Crosses The Line

"Is there any reason why our victim would visit so many of these sites?" Bezzerides asks in a preview clip for the Sunday, July 12 episode.

"Maybe this is where the bodies are buried," Velcoro states.

However, as the mystery continues to unfold with new angles and leads, it could lead both to unexpected confrontations with their pasts--and Bezzerides may come face to face with a ghost from hers.

"Those moments that stare back at you. You don't remember them, but they remember you," she says in the clip.

True Detective airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
