British boy band One Direction were the big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, edging out Rihanna and taking home three prizes to crown their arrival on the U.S. pop scene just six months ago.

One Direction has taken home the 2012 MTV VMA Best Pop Video! After facing stiff competition in the category from the likes of Justin Bieber and Rihanna,the British boyband prevailed.

Boy band sensation One Direction is going to be at the MTV Video Awards for the first time ever on Sept. 6 and they are nominated for some of the biggest awards of the night. The first timers are up for Best New Artist and Best Pop Video, and they are going against the Wanted, another U.K. band that has been taking the U.S. by storm. The battle of the boy bands will take center stage starting at 8 p.m./ 7c.
