Max Greenfield is going to be part of the most disturbing scene in American Horror Story history this fall.

Darren Criss Joining 'American Horror Story' and in Conflict With Kathy Bates?

Greenfield is playing a very different character from Schmidt, his goofy New Girl character. The actor is set to play a role in American Horror Story: Hotel, the horror anthology's fifth season.

American Horror Story boss Ryan Murphy spoke at the TCA Summer Press Tour on Friday where he revealed a lot of details about Greenfield's character.

"He plays an addict who checks into the hotel and tangles with Sarah Paulson," Murphy said. "I said [to him], 'I have a feeling that you can and want to do something really f---ed up.' And he said, 'How did you know?' So he cut off his beautiful hair and dyed it. And I think he's lost 30 pounds. Yesterday, I talked to him and his waist I think is down to a 27. So he's really committed to it."

Murphy went on to discuss how Greenfield will be at the center of "the most disturbing scene we've ever done," adding, "He really pushed himself as an actor. I was proud of him."

Paulson's character is also an addict, a drug addict to be specific, so perhaps there will be a particularly disturbing drug sequence. It is not known how strong of a role Greenfield will have in Hotel, though based on Murphy's comments, it sounds like it will be memorable.

American Horror Story: Hotel premieres Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
