Rabe is set to play the serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the upcoming fifth season of American Horror Story. The news was announced by AHS boss Ryan Murphy at the TCA Summer Press Tour on Friday.

Murphy explained Rabe's role in the new season as follows:

"We're doing a two-part, well, we always do a two-part Halloween episode, but our Halloween episode this year is called 'Devil's Night,'" Murphy explained. "I'm directing it because I love the script so much, when we finished it I said, 'I can't give this to anybody else.' Lily Rabe is coming to that episode. And she's playing Aileen Wuornos, which is really fun and bizarre. I don't want to give too much away but I will tell you that she's at the centerpiece of that, and that's who she's playing."

Wuornos killed seven men in Florida from 1989-90 who she claimed had either raped or intended to rape her. After being convicted of the murders, she was sentenced to death by lethal injection. She was executed in 2002 by the State of Florida.

Charlize Theron played Wuornos in the 2003 biopic Monster. Critics lauded her performance and she was showered with awards, including an Oscar for Best Actress.

It will be interesting to see Rabe's take on Wuornos, especially if she completely transforms her appearance as Theron did.

American Horror Story: Hotel premieres Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
