Alycia Debnam-Carey is ready to speak out about on of the most polarizing deaths in recent television history

The 100 bid farewell to Commander Lexa (Debnam-Carey) over two weeks ago now, but the fandom is still feeling aftershocks from the events of "Thirteen." Lexa's demise furnished the series with one of its biggest reveals to date, but it also prompted allegations that the previously LGBT-friendly show had played right into Hollywood's "Bury Your Gays" trope.

For those who don't know, the untenable trend deals with the frequent deaths of LGBT characters as well as writers' seeming inability to furnish these same characters with happy, healthy romantic relationships. While many fans understood the logic behind Lexa's departure, just as many felt betrayed.

Debnam-Carey, who had to depart the show due to her role in Fear the Walking Dead, spoke about the issue while promoting her zombie adventure at PaleyFest.

"It is important to note that the decisions only ever come from love and trust within the show," Debnam-Carey told Entertainment Weekly. "I don't think it was ever intended to aggravate anyone in a social situation. There's so much love for that character, like from me, from the writers and from Jason [Rothenberg]."

The actress is of course saddened to hear that a segment of viewers are now planning to boycott the series. However, she was quick to acknowledge the legitimacy of the fandom's complaints.

"I do understand, of course, it's a social issue. If people are feeling that way, it's really important to recognize," Debnam-Carey explained. "I hate thinking people thought it was insensitive, because it was such a beautiful episode for us to shoot as well."

The finality of Lexa's death has been confirmed by multiple sources, and the 22-year-old Australian echoed these sentiments. However, it is important to note that while the Heda has departed her corporeal body, her consciousness is still tied in with Becca's second AI. Fans should expect that detail to resurface before the season is through.

The 100 is currently on a brief break, but the post-apocalyptic drama will return to The CW on March 31 at 9 p.m. ET. Click the video below to see a preview for the series' next episode, "Stealing Fire."
