The cast of Netflix's Bloodline is just as surprised by the various twists and turns of the show as anyone else.

*Spoilers ahead through season 1 of Bloodline*

Bloodline is well known for its dark family drama, dysfunctional relationships and shocking plot twists, all of which culminated in the penultimate episode of season 1, when John (Kyle Chandler) killed his troubled brother Danny (Ben Mendelsohn).

As fans prepare for the upcoming second season, set to drop May 27, Chandler, Mendelsohn and Sissy Spacek (who plays family matriarch Sally) recently discussed the process of filming the Florida Keys drama.

"They are genius at turning your expectations - tilting them and then tilting them again," Mendelsohn said, of show creators Glenn Kessler, Todd Kessler and Daniel Zelman. "So there's always a surprise with what's going on. [...] Once a scene is shot, they can't write anything else. So they tend to take every opportunity they've got to investigate stuff right up until that point."

Chandler suggested that he and his fellow cast members had little idea of how the show would ultimately come together as the were filming it last season.

"We had no clue what we had done, what we were doing, what their style was - we had no idea of anything," Chandler admitted. "We were just in the Keys, having fun, getting paid for what we do. [...] You're sort of in a plane and it's flying along and you're sort of running out of gas. But we landed safely last year, and hopefully we'll land safely again."

Spacek tries to imagine her role and the show as a "living breathing thing," adding, "I have a very rich imagination, so when I'm not working, I'm imagining Sally. Everything for me is thinking about Sally and her children and her life, but then they still surprise me."

As for what fans should expect from season 2, Mendelsohn said it was "impossible" to reveal anything without spoiling it. Sounds like fans will just have to wait and see what's next for the complicated Rayburn family.

Bloodline season 2 is scheduled to drop every episode on Netflix on May 27.
