Tony DiNozzo's NCIS fate is not set in stone.

The elevator doors will close on Michael Weatherly's Agent DiNozzo for a finale time during Tuesday's "Family First," and longtime NCIS fans are stealing themselves for a heart-wrenching goodbye. Gibbs (Mark Harmon) shouldn't throw away Tony's Mighty Mouse stapler quite yet, however.

"The craziest thing that I can say right now is, it ain't over," Weatherly teased ahead of the finale, Tony's coy smile sneaking across his face. "I mean, stay tuned. In the world of NCIS, nobody knows anything."

Weatherly will leave his shoe in the door over at NCIS HQ, opening up a possibility for an appearance on one of the series' spinoffs. The actor popped up on NCIS: Los Angeles earlier this year, and, according to TV Insider, that visit was intended to create a possible jumping off point for a later episode.

"I wanted to do L.A. because I knew I was leaving," Weatherly explained. "I really wanted DiNozzo to touch all corners of the NCIS universe before I had to go."

When the finale opens, Tony will trade the Beltway for the streets of Tel Aviv as he attempts to locate Ziva David (Cote de Pablo). An explosion at her father's house leads fans and agents alike to assume the worse during "Dead Letter," and Tony will be tasked with locating his old partner while the DC team tracks down Trent Kort. By time the hour is over, NCIS will expose an entirely new side of the beloved character.

"What happened for me in the season finale is that I discovered an aspect of DiNozzo that had never been revealed before, and it very much surprised me," Weatherly said of his final scene, according to Deadline. "I will say, in that scene, I didn't recognize Michael Weatherly at all and very little of Tony DiNozzo. It's more likely that DiNozzo would give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation than what he does in that last scene."
