'Game of Thrones' Season 6: Have Varys' True Intentions Finally Been Revealed? [VIDEO]
He was once the Master of Whispers and his nickname has been The Spider for six seasons, and now, Varys' (Conleth Hill) true intentions on Game of Thrones may finally have been revealed through a fan theory.
Varys proved he was a supporter of Daenerys Targaryen's (Emilia Clarke) claim to the Iron Throne when he told Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) back in season five that he had hoped to get her back to Westeros and on the throne eventually. Now, after he was shown getting her more alliances and growing her fleet further by brokering an alliance with the remaining Tyrell and Martell family members, a new fan theory has emerged which suggests he was always working to further Dany's cause.
"So I have been maintaining that Varys is playing the best game out of anyone. He conspired with Illyrio to get Daenerys married to Khal Drogo. Varys conspired with him to get her dragon eggs, Varys conspired with Jorah from the beginning. To me, a lot of her success is owed to Varys," the theory begins.
The writer of the theory then discusses Varys appearing to sell Tyrion out back in season four when he was on trial for Joffrey's murder, and how it initially seemed confusing, but now made more sense.
"I was rewatching the trial of Tyrion after Joffrey's assassination, and I recalled a confused feeling I had not remembered since seeing the episode. Before the trial, and after the battle of Blackwater, Varys visited Tyrion and congratulated him," the theory states. "They actually spend a good deal of time developing their friendship. But when Varys is called to the stand to testify, what happens? He testifies against Tyrion."
"He gives a damning analysis of Tyrion," it continues. "And I wondered why he did that, since I heard it. I thought he was somehow doing this to protect himself, the way Bronn later refuses Tyrion's request to be his champion. I was somewhat content with that logic. But as I watched it last night I found new logic that served that scene greater purpose."
The writer then goes on to say that it made sense because the only way for Varys to get what he truly sought was to help sneak Tyrion out of King's Landing completely, and it needed to be done where he had been a prisoner first. Had he not been tried and found guilty of Joffrey's murder, that wouldn't have happened.
"He wanted Tyrion to be found guilty. And why? He wanted to give him to Daenerys. He conspired with Jaime to free him. He organized his passage to Daenerys. And he got abducted by whom? Jorah Mormont. A person who conspired with Varys from the very beginning. Deliberate or no?" It reads. "Definitely convenient. I don't think anything actually happens to Varys. It's all part of the Spider's web."
