Fox wants to believe in the future of X-Files, and they're not afraid who knows it.

Revivals and reboots are like catnip to networks these days, and The X-Files' January return proved way. Equipped with devoted (and starved) fanbases, shows like Chris Carter's sci-fi juggernaut really bring in the ratings - so much so, in fact, that an extended season 11 could be in store for Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson).

"We would have liked to have done more [episodes] in the first place," Dana Walden, Fox television chairman and CEO, said, according to TV Line. "It was really the limitations of David and Gillian and Chris' schedules. Gillian lives in the UK, David lives in New York and California, and we do the show in Vancouver. Chris lives up north. So it was just trying to coordinate a time where they all carve out a period to be in Vancouver."

For Walden, upping the episode order from six to ten would be ideal. Perhaps this extension would give writers a chance to smooth out the mixture of mythology-building and case-of-the-week episodes. After Fox scrambled the series' airing order last winter, viewers were left with the impression that the '90s drama had returned slightly off kilter.

Now that Fox has induced a new generation into the world of X-Files - and left them with one hell of a cliffhanger - execs roundly believe a 2018 run will smooth out the kinks.

"The show was off the air for a very long time. It was introduced to new viewers, and (the writers) had the challenge of filling in the mythology," Walden explained to Deadline. "Going forward, there won't be the same obligation to reset the series."
