Is Blindspot's Kurt Weller is climbing the corporate ladder? The FBI agent assumed control of the New York team in the wake of Mayfair's exit, but no matter what Oscar and Co. may hope, the Assistant Director's demise doesn't mean his promotion is secure.

Season 2 will pick up three months after the events of "Why Await Life's End," and the time jump will give the Bureau plenty of time to learn of Mayfair's unfortunate fate. Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) will step into her role, according to Spoiler TV, and he will official have the title Assistant Director by time episode 5 rolls around.

Unbeknownst to the FBI, they are playing right into Sheppard's plans.

"There's a hint to it in the finale, where we say they knew that if they gave Weller all these tattoos, it would give him enough wins to become the next Mayfair, and he was a much more decent person than Mayfair, and Mayfair wouldn't just be replaced by another cog in the system," showrunner Martin Gero told Entertainment Weekly. "That's part of it, but the bigger question of Why Weller? is a question for season 2."

Sullivan, however, isn't entirely sure if Weller's new job will stick.

I don't know. We'll find out. I haven't asked [Gero] how long I'm going to be in charge," the actor told Starry Constellation Magazine at San Diego Comic-Con. For now, the promotion just means the character "will have more dialogue in the office."

In the meantime, the Blindspot team will be focused on getting justice for their former boss.

"Even though they're really upset at Jane, they all have a common goal now, which is bringing down the people that did this to Mayfair and trying to find out what this is all about," Gero told TV Line.

Blindspot will return to NBC on Sept. 14. Click the video below to see a preview for season 2.
