‘Gears of War’ video game finally gets a film adaptation with Microsoft and Universal Pictures partnership
Ever since 2007, many are wondering if Hollywood would be able to create a film adaptation of the popular game "Gears of War." Now, fans will just have to wait a little longer for the game to hit the big screens.
According to CNET, it has been confirmed that "Gears of War" will be having a film adaptation. It was first attempted in 2007 when New Line Cinema acquired the rights to make a film. However, after a series of budget cuts and re-writes, the company gave the project up in 2013.
As of writing, there is still no news or updates regarding the film. There are a couple of names attached to the project like Scott Stuber who is the producer of "Central Intelligence", "Ted" and "Role Models," and Dylan Clark who produced the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" franchise.
The first "Gears of War" game follows the character Marcus Fenix and his team as they fight the Locust. The Locust is a race of aliens who live underground and are obsessed with luminous goo called "emulsion." Although it is not clear yet if the movie will follow this story line or align with the upcoming release of "Gears of War" 4 which follows Marcus' son.
However, they could still be a possibility that the movie will have a different story compared to the video game. According to The Verge, Rod Fergusson who is the head of The Coalition said during a live stream interview that since there are two different mediums, there would also be two different audiences. He also added that a lot of video game movies have failed in the past because the producers tried to create a movie that would appeal the gamers.
Meanwhile, "Gears of War" 4 is due to be released on Xbox One and Windows 10 next week.
