Survivor: Gabon castaway Dan Kay is the fourth contestant to participate on the reality show who has died.

Kay died at the age of 40 on Dec. 31, and the Survivor community is still in mourning. A valued member of the Survivor: Gabon cast, Kay is survived by his girlfriend, two kids, mother and many friends and family members.

He now joins a small list of Survivor contestants who have passed away since competing on the show. Let's take a look back on the other unfortunate Survivor deaths:

Jennifer Lyon - Survivor: Palau

Lyon was the first U.S. Survivor contestant to die after participating in the series. She died at the age of 37 on Jan. 19, 2010 after battling stage three breast cancer for six years. She had placed fourth on Survivor: Palau and was generally considered one of the most likable people on the cast. All star Jonny Fairplay told Us Weekly after her death: "Jen was such a beautiful person. I wish life was as simple as 'Survivor' because I know for a fact there are 300 of us that would use every immunity idol and jury vote in the world to have her back."

B.B. Andersen - Survivor: Borneo

Andersen was one of the original Survivor castaways who helped turn the series into an overnight success. He was the second person voted out after quibbling with his younger tribemates. Andersen died at 77 on Oct. 29, 2013 after battling brain cancer. Survivor host Jeff Probst said at the time: "He was a powerful presence on the show and that zest for epic adventure was at the heart of everything he did. I was very saddened to hear of his passing."

Caleb Bankston - Survivor: Blood vs. Water

Bankston competed in Survivor: Blood vs. Water as all-star Colton Cumbie's fiancé. Another player who was considered likable by his cast, Bankston made it deep into the game, coming in ninth place overall. Bankston's death is one of the most shocking of all, having died at 27 on June 24, 2014 from a railway accident. Survivor winner Aras Baskauskas called Bankston "one of the sweetest and most sincere humans I've ever come across. I am gutted by his loss. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."
