Several details regarding American Horror Story: Coven were released Friday by Entertainment Weekly.

American Horror Story: Coven features a coven of Salem witches who have flocked to New Orleans to escape persecution in the north. In the present, the witches start getting killed off by various threats that want to see them go extinct. Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange), the "Supreme" witch, swoops into town with a vengeance after hearing of the killings.

In New Orleans, Fiona reunites with her estranged daughter Cordelia (Sarah Paulson), who runs Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, a school dedicated to protecting and educating young witches. The witch population is dying out since many are afraid to reproduce in fear of passing on their mystical genes.

One of the witches' biggest enemies is the coven of local voodoo witches. Their rivalry ignites again when Fiona comes into town.

"There's sort of two formidable clans of witches in New Orleans," executive producer Tim Minear explained to Entertainment Weekly. "The voodoo witches were there first, and the Salem witches fled to the South from the persecution of the North, and these two factions are ancient enemies."

Another big conflict this season will be between Fiona and Cordelia. While Fiona wants to attack their enemies aggressively, Cordelia takes a more passive approach. The mother/daughter duo clashes over how to instruct the Academy's four students: troubled teen Madison (Emma Roberts), shy girl Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), confident Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) and mysterious Nan (Jamie Brewer).

American Horror Story fans who loved the relationship between Violet (Farmiga) and Tate (Evan Peters) will be happy to learn that the character's actors may be paired up again for Coven. Peters will play Kyle, a frat guy who develops a crush on Zoe, Farmiga's character.

The series will also take place in the 1830s, featuring real-life New Orleans women. Enstars previously reported that Kathy Bates plays Madame Delphine LaLaurie, a socialite who tortured and killed slaves. According to the new report, Madame LaLaurie uses her slaves' blood as wrinkle cream.

Angela Bassett plays Marie Laveau, a real-life voodoo priestess who becomes the enemy of Madame LaLaurie.

American Horror Story: Coven is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. on FX.
