Season 3 of American Horror Story premieres Wednesday night at 10 p.m. EST on FX with a whole new location, new villains and a bewitching new premise.

Officially titled American Horror Story: Coven, the third installment in the horror anthology series is set in New Orleans, where descendants of the Salem witch trials try to live in peace. The witches are shocked to learn that one of their own has been murdered, causing Supreme witch Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange) to flock from California to try and protect her coven.

Fiona has a rocky relationship with daughter Cordelia (Sarah Paulson), who is the headmistress of Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, a school dedicated to protecting young witches. Viewers are also introduced to Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), a young witch who discovers her powers after accidentally killing a man during intercourse.

Zoe is shipped off to the Academy, where she meets her fellow classmates: troubled teen star Madison (Emma Roberts), tough girl Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) and the enigmatic Nan (Jamie Brewer). Zoe also falls in love at first sight with frat boy Kyle (Evan Peters) at a party but is hesitant to start a relationship with him after her previous experience.

While Cordelia tries to teach the girls how to live in peace with others, Fiona takes a more aggressive approach, telling them that they need to learn how to fight or else they'll be burned at the stake. Fiona also reignites old tensions between the voodoo priestesses of New Orleans like Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett).

Additionally, one of the primary villains this season will be Madame Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates), a real-life New Orleans socialite who tortured and killed slaves in her mansion. LaLaurie bathes in the blood of others in order to preserve her youth.

American Horror Story: Coven will be more humorous and lighter in tone than season 2's Asylum, according to series co-creator Ryan Murphy. Fans should still expect a good dose of horror though, as witches, voodoo priestesses and monsters wage war against each other in the heart of New Orleans.

American Horror Story: Coven premieres Wednesday at 10 p.m. on FX.
