He's been heartbroken ever since she called off their engagement because she felt he was too much of a danger for her and their son, but now, Steve (Stephen Nichols) could see his feelings turning towards ones of rage when he spots Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) with Fynn (Alexander Bruszt) on Days of Our Lives.

Despite the charges against him for Ava's murder--which was really committed by Joey (James Lastovic), being dropped, Kayla decided she couldn't continue living the life she did when she was Steve, and called off their engagement. Since then, Steve, has been heartbroken and somewhat determined to try and get her back, and his concern for her only gre when he realized she was suffering from a subdural hematoma due to when Ava knocked her out and held her captive. However, despite his efforts to try and check on her and get close to her again so he can take care of her, Fynn warned him he should stay away, since the stress he brought into Kayla's life kept affecting her.

However, now, after witnessing a moment between Kayla and Fynn that appears to be more than one of colleagues and friends, Steve could become enraged if he feels that Kayla is moving on from him so quickly--and especially with the man who told him to stay away. Now, he could become more resolved than ever to do whatever it takes to prove to Kayla that they belong together--and he will do anything he can to win her back.

What could work for him unexpectedly however, if some of the problem they are having with Joey since he's been very upset after learning they were splitting up again. His involvement with Jade (Paige Searcy) has been somewhat radical, with the two not only planning to run away to Los Angeles together to teach their families a lesson about making them upset, but they are also moving very quickly in a physical sense, with Kayla already catching them half-naked on her couch. Now, as Joey potentially takes things even further with Jade, Steve could step in and find a way to get the girl away from his son, potentially earning back the trust of the woman he loves in the process.
