Malec fans shouldn't get too comfortable over the hiatus.

Shadowhunters accelerated Magnus Bane (Harry Shum, Jr.) and Alec Lightwood's (Matthew Daddario) romance over the course of season 1, and fans should remember that the latter's coming out is a prime example of the changes enacted as writers reworked Cassandra Clare's novels for television. If you thought the Lydia twist was shocking, future seasons will be as nerve wracking as a sunrise ride on a vamp's motorcycle.

"The journey of Alec in Season One is of him owning his power and his authenticity. The journey for Magnus is of him breaking down his walls and giving himself up to love. But that doesn't mean everything always works out," executive producer Michael Reisz told Paste. "You never know where things are going to go, and so we have seasons worth of stories planned for them that will both honor and surprise the fans and the characters. Having him come out at the end of Season One gives us an opportunity to launch into the stories we have planned for the future."

After all, what's a teen paranormal romance without all the drama?
