He was set to go to trial and face the consequences of allegedly murdering Ava in her hospital room, but an unexpected twist will see Steve (Stephen Nichols) suddenly freed from all wrongdoing and no longer being potentially convicted of murder on Days of Our Lives.

After the pain of everything she put their family through became too much to bear, Steve and Kayla's (Mary Beth Evans) son, Joey (James Lastovic) snuck into Ava's room and suffocated her. To protect his son, Steve claimed to be the one responsible, and has even prepared to plead guilty to the crime in an effort to get a potentially reduced sentence.

However, John (Drake Hogestyn) had no intention of losing his business partner, and now, he will come through in a big way for Steve by bringing the ISA director, Pamela Vandamme, to Salem to share some big news. And when she shares what she has to say, it will be the very thing that changes the entire course of the case, because when she finishes, all of the charges against Steve will be dropped, and he will be a free man.

However, though the news should be of a happier variety, it will only cause more problems for Steve's family.

When he was headed to jail to try and protect their son, Kayla was more than happy to stay engaged to him until he was able to come back home to her. However, now that he is free, she will begin to worry that the lack of any consequences for murdering Ava will drive Joey to confess to what he did and ruin everything. Possibly sure that Steve and John found a way to get him freed that wasn't entirely ethical, or scared that the ISA stepping in to get him off would reopen him to working for them again and abandoning his family once more, Kayla will make an unexpected decision then that will break Steve's heart by ending their engagement.

Days of Our Lives airs Monday-Friday at 1 p.m. on NBC.
